The Backstreets in the Higashiyama Area
You pass through this area on the way up to visit the Kiyomizu-dera Temple, one of the most popular tourist sites in Japan. The area comprises many narrow streets and hundreds of small eateries and shops selling every kind of tourist product - and other items of Japanese culture. We were here in early March and it was already heaving with tourists, mostly Japanese in fact, including many schoolchildren. Goodness knows what it must be like in summer! But you could spend all day here and visiting the temple.
