| We visited Hiroshima in June 2019. It is today a beautiful, dynamic, thriving and exciting city - AND of course a symbol and reminder of the insanity of war and the suffering it causes. The world changed forever at 8:15 a.m. on 6 August 1945, but mass-destruction and killing was nothing new - just more efficient from that day on.

Hiroshima is a typical Japanese city: beautiful, modern, clean and efficient - with LOADS of places to eat out.Six rivers flow through it, with a reputed 2,800 bridges. The people are very friendly and welcoming. A sign "Welcome to Hiroshima" greets you at the station. The 11th biggest city in Japan, its population is around 1,200,000 people - when the bomb dropped, it was around 350,000. The Hiroshima Peace Park is the third most-visited tourist attraction in Japan. The War Memorials are tasteful, moving - and sad. Instead of a subway, there are Hiroshima's iconic trams - including survivors of the bombing. The island of Itsukushima and its world-famous shrine and mythical Mount Misen are a short ferry ride away. |
