The total land area of Japan is 377, 700 sq km. Because of its mountainous terrain, approximately 67% of Japan's land is uninhabitable. The habitable zones, mainly in coastal areas, have extremely high population densities.

So land is precious in Japan. There is nothing resembling the great plains of the USA or the huge felds one can find on other continents.
