| The children are celebrating the end of he exams and their schooldays. Most have been at the bottle somewhat. Anne is taking the lead as a pirate captain, telling jokes and dancing dreamily. The children are laughing and dancing about as a bonfire burns. Then Gilbert arrives .... slowly, hesitantly. Anne looks at him astonished; the other children give them some space ...... |
Gilbert:
|
"May I speak with you, please?" |
| Anne jumps down from the boat where she is acting out a pirate captain. There is a long pause accompanied by meaningful looks ..... then Gilbert tries and fails to speak his heart. |
| Gilbert: |
"Then her father laid it out on a silver platter." |
| Anne: |
"Laid ..... what out on a platter?" |
| Gilbert: |
"The Sorbonne, Paris, the money to do it... my future if I want it ..... permission .... to propose. I don't know what to do." |
| Anne: |
"You don't went to be country doctor; the Sorbonne is your dream; Winifried is lovely and her parents are supportive. I don't understand; what's holding you back?" |
| Gilbert: |
"Just .... one thing." |
| long pause ...... Anne looks nonplussed, and a little bit tipsy. |
| Anne: |
"I don't know what to say. What am I supposed to .... and everyone, everyone is ... and now I'm pirate .... and Paris is.... and you are never gonna find ... that much I know, so how can't I ... we ......"
|
| The giggling and slightly tipsy girls come rushing up at (of course!) the critical moment ..... |
| The Girls: |
"Anne, Anne! We want to do one of your rituals ......We need to mark this moment ... remember it till the end of time. Come on Anne."
|
| long pause ...... |
| Gilbert: |
"I'll be off then. Good night." |
| and the moment has passed ...... |
